Building the Evidence for a Greener Construction industry in Rwanda
On 04 March 2026, we successfully conducted a training for enumerators under the project “Pathways to a Greener, More Productive Firm Landscape in Rwanda’s Built Environment.” The session prepared the field team for the upcoming survey that will explore how firms in Rwanda’s construction sector can transition toward greener, more productive, and more sustainable practices.
The training was led by Prof. Aimé Tsinda (University of Rwanda), Mr Roger (Equilibria Ltd) and Alex (IDOS), focusing on survey methodology, data quality standards, and ethical data collection to ensure robust and reliable fieldwork.
The survey is co-financed by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented under the Climate-sensitive, Socially Just Planning and Housing (CSPH) project of GIZ Rwanda–Burundi, with Equilibria Ltd leading the field data collection.
As Rwanda continues to urbanize rapidly, the construction sector faces a critical opportunity: meeting the growing demand for housing while accelerating the transition toward a green and circular economy. This research will help identify the skills, incentives, and policy conditions needed to support a just and productive green transformation in Rwanda’s built environment.
The results will contribute to evidence-based policy recommendations for institutions such as MININFRA, Rwanda Housing Authority (RHA), GIZ, and other stakeholders, helping shape practical solutions for a sustainable and resilient urban future.
